Maira Houck
New York, NY
Second Year, Fashion Design Major
Maira’s dancing roots led her to pursue a career in fashion design. Since she was 10 years old, Maira spent numerous hours every day training in ballet and contemporary dance. She was devoted to everything "stage-related," which included embroidering her friends’ and her own ballet costumes. After working as a model, Maira knew that she understood women’s fashion, and she attended FIT with the hope of one day developing a women’s clothing line that complements figures of all shapes and sizes. Maira’s designs are inspired by her life as a dancer, and her unique style was awarded second place at the 2009 Fusion Fashion Show. Maira wants to use fashion to help real-life issues, and she is looking forward to participating as a designer in the Addressing Psoriasis™ Fashion Show. She says, "The real purpose of fashion is to make people feel more comfortable in their own skin—more confident and more beautiful."
